 NOCTE Synopsis:

SAVE ME AND I'LL SAVE YOU....

My name is Calla Price. I’m eighteen years old, and I’m one half of a whole. My other half-- my twin brother, my Finn-- is crazy.

I love him. More than life, more than anything. And even though I’m terrified he’ll suck me down with him, no one can save him but me.

I’m doing all I can to stay afloat in a sea of insanity, but I’m drowning more and more each day. So I reach out for a lifeline.

Dare DuBray.

He’s my savior and my anti-Christ. His arms are where I feel safe, where I’m afraid, where I belong, where I’m lost. He will heal me, break me, love me and hate me. He has the power to destroy me.

Maybe that’s ok. Because I can’t seem to save Finn and love Dare without everyone getting hurt.

 Why? Because of a secret.

A secret I’m so busy trying to figure out, that I never see it coming.

You won’t either.

EXCERPT:
Glancing up, I suck my breath in when I find dark eyes connected to mine, eyes so dark they’re almost black, and the energy in them is enough to freeze me in place.

A boy is attached to the dark gaze.

A man.

He’s probably no more than twenty or twenty-one, but everything about him screams man. There’s no boy in him. That part of him is very clearly gone. I see it in his eyes, in the way he holds himself, in the perceptive way he takes in his surroundings, then stares at me with singular focus, like we’re somehow connected by a tether. He’s got a million contradictions in his
eyes….aloofness, warmth, mystery, charm, and something else I can’t define.

He’s muscular, tall, and wearing a tattered black sweatshirt that says Irony is lost on you in orange letters. His dark jeans are belted with black leather, and a silver band encircles his middle finger.

Dark hair tumbles into his face and a hand with long fingers impatiently brushes it back, all the while his eyes are still connected with mine. His jaw is strong and masculine, with the barest hint of stubble.
His gaze is still connected to mine, like a livewire, or a lightning bolt. I can feel the charge of it racing along my skin, like a million tiny fingers, flushing my cheeks. My lungs flutter and I swallow hard.

And then, he smiles at me.

At me.

Because I don’t know him and he doesn’t know better.

All Sam wants is the truth, and if she can unlock her clouded memories of that fateful night, she can finally move on, But what if not remembering is the only thing keeping Sam alive?

My Review:

To be honest, I was a little reluctant to start this book just because it didn't look like "my" kind of thing. Well let me tell you, I am not going to let what's "my" thing hold me back anymore, cause this book was frigging amazing!

I started reading this book on camp - I had downloaded it to my phone and I didn't have my other book on me so I decided to give it a shot, and within a few chapters I was hooked. On the way home from camp I ditched my other book to read this, and was so enraptured that I totally lost track of where I was and forgot to text my mum to come pick me up until my destination was in sight. Oops.

Things I loved about this book (in absolutely no order whatsoever):

1. The Writing:Jen (yes i call her Jen, cause we sah close brah) is an amazing author and reading another one of her books felt like coming home. The witty banter, engaging characters and all rounded amazingness exudes from every one of her books. No matter the different themes, different characters, different styles, different everything the writing is always amazing and just traps you.

2. The Story Line:I have a thing against outlining the plot because I don't really read plots. Or I do when I download or buy a book and then after that forget about it totally - it makes for a nice surprise when you read the book. But if you're here you've probably read the book or the plot - so you know that it's a mystery, that there's something you don't know. And that wanting to know is so strong. At first you're a little bit like "eh, I know some of her past I just want to see what she becomes" but as you keep going you so want to know that the desire to skip ahead is such a temptation. It's like a murder mystery "*gasp* it was the maid!" (it wasn't the maid...)

3. The Characters and their Relationships:I swear, I need Jen's secret. How does she have an endless supply of different original, amazing characters? How does she create different relationships that are still so ideal and amazing and....gah! But seriously, I want the relationship that was a main feature of this book. I want a relationship where we are so open and brutally honest, where we can literally say anything without fear of offence. Where we can be just so....argh just read it and then talk to me!

There's about a bazillion more things that I could say about this book but life is going on around me and I have no more time to write this review, but everything about this book is incredible. As always, Jen has created a masterpiece beyond belief that I am so thankful to have read.

Of Poseidon (The Syrena Legacy #1) by Anna Banks

Of Poseidon (The Syrena Legacy #1) - by Anna Banks

Official Blurb:

Galen is the prince of the Syrena, sent to land to find a girl he's heard can communicate with fish. Emma is on vacation at the beach. When she runs into Galen—literally, ouch!—both teens sense a connection. But it will take several encounters, including a deadly one with a shark, for Galen to be convinced of Emma's gifts. Now, if he can only convince Emma that she holds the key to his kingdom...

Told from both Emma and Galen's points of view, here is a fish-out-of-water story that sparkles with intrigue, humor, and waves of romance

My Review:

I have a little bit of a thing for mermaids and mermen but somehow YA fiction doesn't tend to do them justice...except this book does. SO much. To be honet, I didn't entirely know what to expect with this book - I just got a text one day, saying: ya have to read of poseidon and i'm like: wahhhh? so i'm ready to text back when I get: it's AMAZING! So, now I'm intrigued, right? Except that said friend refuses to text me back at such an instance so I just put it on my mental to-read list (which is LOOONG)

So there I am walking through my book store when I see none other than this book and so, on recommendation from my friend, I pick it up and open to page one. I didn't put it down after that. I had the book, a copy on my phone and one on my computer and one on my kindle so that, no matter where I was, I could read it. And I swear on all that is holy that right now it is taking all of my self control to remain here and not run to the bookstore to buy the second one. Or, more likely, turn on my kindle to see if the second one has downloaded yet.

So, now that I've gotten you all hyped and told you that there's mer-people in this book, you're probably wondering why this book is so amazing. Why, you asked? Well, that's a very good question.

1. Fast paced
To be quite honest, I was surprised when I finished the book because I felt like more needed to happen and, 300 odd pages should be enough to have tons of action, right? I'm not really sure anymore. I didn't manage to contain my urge to skip to the last page (oops, silly me) and yet I still polished it off in a couple hours. It just had me hooked and, sometimes, that's all you need.

2. The characters
I kind of felt like each different character represented different aspects of human nature, with a little bit of cross over of course. Being an english student sometimes ruins my life, but in this case it's led me to read this book with a little bit of a critical eye and an open mind - it's led me to look at how each character could be a representation of me and/or of humans in general and just the way that each character is developed and presented in each chapter is enough to have me feeling that each character is truly human and a representation of a part of me or at least someone I know

3. Banks' creation
I guess the entire book is Banks' creation, eh? No, but what I'm talking about here is specifically the creatures and the world that Banks has given to us, and how it contrasts with other creations that were based on similar situations. Just the complexity of the history of an entire species and the depth of thought that goes into every single part of this work is evident and SO amazing - something I, and other authors, strive to do.

4. The Writing
Told from dual points of view and dual persons (that's a word, right), this book really interested me through the way it was written. Told in both first person and third person occasionally gets confusing and yet Banks has managed to expertly manipulate this complex style to reveal a depth of plot, character and intellect not commonly found in literature today, let alone in a debut novel!

So yeah, in case you haven't realised this book caught me hook, line and sinker and as I type this I lament the fact that I don't make enough allowance to buy books two and three in paperback. *sigh* I guess an online version is better than nothing!

Fare the well, my friends, and keep reading! Let me know your thoughts!!

Of Beast and Beauty by Stacey Jay

Of Beast and Beauty - by Stacey Jay
Official Blurb:

In the beginning was the darkness, and in the darkness was a girl, and in the girl was a secret...

In the domed city of Yuan, the blind Princess Isra, a Smooth Skin, is raised to be a human sacrifice whose death will ensure her city’s vitality. In the desert outside Yuan, Gem, a mutant beast, fights to save his people, the Monstrous, from starvation. Neither dreams that together, they could return balance to both their worlds.

Isra wants to help the city’s Banished people, second-class citizens despised for possessing Monstrous traits. But after she enlists the aid of her prisoner, Gem, who has been captured while trying to steal Yuan’s enchanted roses, she begins to care for him, and to question everything she has been brought up to believe.

As secrets are revealed and Isra’s sight, which vanished during her childhood, returned, Isra will have to choose between duty to her people and the beast she has come to love.

My Review:

This book took me an embarrassingly long time to read, and I really have no excuse for that except maybe that I wanted this book to last as long as possible. I read it on recommendation from a friend who hadn't finished it yet and my god you could tell by the end of the prologue that this book was going to be amazing. It didn't let it's legacy down.

As you may have guessed from the title, this book is a spin on the classic tale Beauty and the Beast however in this version of the story the Beast is being held captive by the Beauty. The more I write this review the more similarities I find between this story an the original Disney movie I know so well, but when you're reading the book it really doesn't seem that way.

I'm not going to tell you the plot line because that's what the blurb's for but I am just so in love with this story. Everything that happened I somehow found so inspirational and I've seriously come out of reading that book with a ton of new life motto's and such. It was just...GAH!

And GEMSRA!!!!!!!!!!!! *dreamy sigh* It's so beautiful. Every single moment in this book had me sitting on edge and yet at the same time had me sitting back in my seat and thinking about what had just been said or done or thought. I cried in this book. A lot. Especially in the last chapter. Not all of my crying was bad crying, though! I promise! The story line was so well thought out and the whole universe and it's backstory were so original and captivating! The ideas of deception which are evident in every aspect of this story say so much and have taught me so much!

Do you know when you're casually searching the internet for something and up pops one of those people starving in Africa? And for a moment you think: jeez, I've got so much and they have so little, I should be happy with what I have? Well, this book taught me that's not true. Like of course we should feel sad but we each have our own challenges. For us, living like that might be really, really hard but for them it's all they've know. For us, a challenge might be standing up to our parents or fighting to be who we want to be. It's a different kind of challenge but all that matters is that it's a challenge for us because every body's different and will have different challenges.

Isra taught me so, so, so, so much and I can't even begin to tell you what else she taught me except to tell you to read the book. As I think back on it I know that it might not be a book I re-read again and again and again for the story, but it's one I will refer to when my life gets tough and I need the strength to continue.

This book is amazing and I love it so much - but a word of warning. You only get out of a book what you put into it. If you start reading with the idea that it'll be a nice little story that you'll forget a month from now, then you will. Go into it thinking 'what can I learn from this? How can I grow from this?' and I promise you'll learn a lot! Let me know if you've read this and we can talk!! :)
